Program Introduction

Yes, we are back!!!  For the 3rd time, from August 2 till 16 2008 the Regional English Language Office (RELO) of the Embassy of the United States of America in Budapest is holding its "Teaching Tolerance through English" summer camp in Balatonlelle, Hungary. With U.S. Embassy support also from Belgrade, Bratislava, Podgorica, and Pristina, this year's camp is hosting 36 primary school students and 6 teachers from schools in Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, and Slovakia.

The program is helping teachers and students to increase tolerance at their multi-ethnic schools through teaching English. The participants come from communities where different ethnic groups live side by side, and where practical skills and experience to improve mutual tolerance are still developing.

Two English language experts, Dr. Mary Lou McCloskey (Atlanta, Georgia, USA), and Dr. Lydia Stack (San Francisco, California, USA) are training the teachers on how to effectively foster tolerance at their schools, while providing quality English teaching. In the morning the teachers and students participate in joint sessions. During the afternoons, with the help of Camp Director Ms. Molly Staeheli and her 8 Camp Counselors, students do sports, arts and crafts, and intercultural activities, while the teachers continue with their training.
